Robbery Categories in Minnesota

Robbery crimes in Minnesota are divided into simple robbery or aggravated robbery, depending upon whether a weapon was used or whether someone was harmed during the commission of the crime:

    • Simple Robbery – The act of taking personal property from another by the use or threat of imminent use of force, but without causing harm to the person or using a dangerous weapon.  Felony with a sentence up to 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine;
    • Aggravated Robbery in the First Degree – Simple robbery plus possession of a  dangerous weapon or any article used or fashioned in a manner to lead the victim to reasonably believe it to be a dangerous weapon, or inflicting bodily harm upon another. Felony with a sentence up to20 years in prison and/or a $35,000 fine.
    • Aggravated Robbery in the Second Degree – Simple robbery plus implying, by word or act, possession of a dangerous weapon.  Felony with a sentence up to 15 years in prison and/or a $30,000 fine.
